I just want to send some love to you today… Yes, you!
The you that is working to earn a living with art, the one that has only tried a drawing class once, you the professional musician, you the photographer, you the sculptor, you the sous chef, you the graphic designer… and YOU the creator!
We are all so very hard on ourselves, and it often feels like nothing is moving forward, and it is all a struggle.
Most days we have great intentions to go and create, but are unfortunately met with conversations in our mind that sound a lot like one or more of the following concerns:
“I’m not good enough, everyone else is better at this than me, what is the point, feels too hard, I think I’m just tired, too risky, why does it even matter, how will I get it done, it has already been done before, I haven’t learned enough yet, who am I to express this idea, it would probably turn out better if someone else did it, I don’t have the right tools (or as fancy enough tools), I haven’t figured it all out yet….
The list goes on and on, but its all just noise circling around the same fears.
But, those voices can be powerful. They can be so powerful, they keep most people from ever even trying.
Therefore, I just want you to know that I think living a life full of creative pursuits is one of the bravest things you can do.
I have worked a lot of jobs in my life and nothing has felt as dangerous as choosing to show up with a small creation I made on a piece of paper or digital screen and then share it with others.
We all weed through the battle field of all of those fears each and every day because, yes, the weeds grow back every night.
As creators, our job is to simply create something that hadn’t previously existed.
Which I must tell you is quite a miraculous feat. To show up, take, concepts, ideas and pieces from your world and compose them into a new expression is not easy, but it is exhilarating!
And by the way, you are doing great!
As creatives we don’t say this to ourselves enough.
We need each other. We need to remind each other that it is hard, but we can keep taking one step at a time and even enjoy the murkiness of the unknown.
And by the way, you are doing great!
Remember, we aren’t actually competing with one another, we are creating together.
We are all living different unique lives and that is the beauty of of it all, that is the point. Literally, that is the point.
Find your medium of choice and make something that expresses your experiences and interpretations of the life YOU are living…the people you love, the emotions you feel, the spaces you inhabit and all the interactions around you.
Just like how we continue to show up and pursue a new relationship, even if our heart has been broken before or we are fearful of what might go wrong. Deep down we still know it is worth the pursuit.
This is how I truly feel about creative expression. Keep pursuing the love of creating in the same way that you might a new relationship.
Fall in love with the process, see what seems to stick around for a few years or the long haul and know that through it all we are here to have fun and love.
The more we do this the better we become at our creative relationships. Just like with another human, our creative selves need to learn how to become vulnerable, communicative and at times aesthetically pleasing in order for the artistic expression to be of interest or value to anyone other than ourselves.
Ultimately, we are here to share and enjoy the experience of creating with one another. So I just want to give encouragement and love to all of you to go and dance, sing, draw, make music, take photographs, paint, sculpt, design, build, sew, write, speak…
Enjoy the messy relationship with your creative self, because it isn’t easy, but we are here to create.
You are here, you are doing great, be good to yourself and enjoy the process.
