My Story: My traditional training is deeply rooted in academia and fine art. I have been working with a camera formally since high school when I took my first black and white photography course (yes, with a darkroom, film and the wonderful smell of fixer!) Little did I know that would be the beginning of a non-stop unfolding of photography, opportunities and creative growth. I completed undergrad with a Bachelor of Fine Art in photography and then after a year of wandering in the mountains of Colorado, I went back to school and continued my fine art education, completing a Master of Art and Master of Fine Art in photography.
So as you might imagine I love digging deep into the why behind our photographs and what drives us to capture and create!
I think the love of travel snuck up on me, but ironically it did join my life around the same time as photography. I mention this because it is a foundational piece of shaping my desire to start the Intentional Photography program. I took my first trip overseas in 2001. Something opened up for me on that trip that allowed me to experience a sense of exhilaration, freedom and the unexpected ability to be more myself than I had ever felt before. Since that time, travel and photography have continuously weaved in and out and all around my life, stuck around for the long haul and have been two of the most truly transformative partners in my life.
Teaching photography started for me in academics, but over the past nine years it has taken different forms such as, adjunct professor, high school teacher, hosting workshops, guest artist, one-on-one tutoring and seven years of expedition leading with National Geographic Student Expeditions. Photography opportunities and travel has taken me all over the globe; Australia, New Zealand, Tanzania, Kenya, Italy, Greece, England, Iceland, Belize, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the majority of the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii.
At the core of me I truly believe, if we let them, travel, human connection and being fully present are the biggest teachers of our lives.
